On MONDAY, October 25th, have a rough draft, sample slides, a sketch, a script, or something to show me your idea and progress.
On TUESDAY, October 26th, turn in or present your project. No late projects, no excuses. This is a substantial part of your grade.

and personally (the sheer joy of learning a language? eh? eh?)

Written reflection on our Socratic discussion DUE THURSDAY, November 18, 2010. Write neatly in complete sentences and use proper spelling and grammar. I highly recommend you type this assignment. Also, keep in mind: the more thorough your analysis, the higher the grade. Impress me! Impress yourself!
After our discussion, where did you land on the issue? Is learning a second language a waste of time? Why or why not?
Did the articles or discussion in class change your mind? If not, did they soften your position (i.e. make it less extreme on the no or yes side)? Cite students (and their arguments) that convinced you the most.
Give an argument that CONTRADICTS your point of view.
Consider the rhetoric of the articles and your classmates. What kind of persuasion appeals to you? Emotional? Empirical? Boisterous? Soft-spoken?

Traduire ou ne pas traduire? Is using online French-English resources tantamount to cheating?
Written reflection on our Socratic discussion DUE MONDAY, October 18, 2010. Write neatly in complete sentences and use proper spelling and grammar. Feel more than free to type this assignment.
Reflection Questions: 1. State your opinion on our discussion topic and your main reasons. 2. Summarize convincing points from both sides of the issue. If you were present for at least one day of the discussion, cite fellow students. If you were absent both days, cite the article by Lawless on les traducteurs automatiques. 3. Why do you think most people thought it was ok to use online resources? Is it hard to argue against the most popular point of view? 4. Most students found that this issue was not black or white. In fact, there was a lot of "grey area" on which online resources are fair and which are outright cheating. Explain to me where your threshold of cheating is. Draw a line and plot seven examples of online resources and their uses on a spectrum of not cheating to cheating. Show me how far is too far for you. Tell me why.
5. What do you think about having Socratic Discussions as a regular part of French class? Explain. 6. Write at least one French-related discussion question for potential use in a future Socratic Discussion.
